Alarm System Permits

Many police departments require that every home with an alarm system have an Alarm System Permit. Some police departments charge for this alarm permit while others provide the permit for free.

Why Get an Alarm Permit?

Besides the point that if one is required you will likely be fined if your system goes into alarm and you do not have one, there are valid reasons for the police department to require a permit.

False alarms cost residents of the city money. Each time the police have to respond to an alarm that keeps them from being able to respond to other calls including violent crimes and other emergencies. If false alarms are allowed to continue without being checked much of the resources of the police department are spent on things that do not benefit the city.

An alarm permit also give the department names and phone numbers of people to call if the house really was broken into and needs to be re-secured. Without someone to call they are forced to leave the house unattended after they have ensured the intruder is no longer on the premises.

What if I am not having the alarm system monitored?

In most cases permits will still be required. Whether the security system is monitored or not often the neighbors will call in the report if the system goes into alarm. When this happens the police department will need to check the complaint whether there is really a robbery in progress or not.

Does my area require an alarm system permit?

For that you will need to check the police or sheriff department that services your area. Many police departments, like the Redding, CA Police department have their requirements posted online. Example: Redding Alarm Permits

Alarm Company Responsibility

Bottom line, it is your responsibility to check if a permit is required or not. While the alarm company installing the security system should inform you, you will be the one held responsible and will be expected to pay the fine if you do not have an alarm system permit.
