RV Alarms Systems - RV Security
Something not always thought of is that your RV or Motor Home can also be fitted with an aftermarket automotive security system. These are usually not quite as easy to install as with most other vehicles. RV doors don’t turn on dome lights, that means you will either need to use a motion sensor or door and window contacts (similar to home alarms) to secure the RV.
Usually a competent do it yourselfer or RV repair place can find ways to install the cable without making them visible. It’s also not out of the question to use a small wireless device capable home alarm system and attach wireless devices to the doors and windows.
There is also a real problem when you are not using the RV for extended periods of time, alarm systems drain batteries. If the RV is stored outdoors you can attach a solar panel to the top of the vehicle to keep the battery charged.
Using your Home Alarm System to Secure an RV
If you park your RV near your home you have another option to secure your RV. Most Home alarm systems are capable of monitoring wireless devices. I have used this feature many times to secure RVs, Travel Trailers and other equipment near the home. The easiest way is to use a wireless motion detector. You can place the detector in a location where it cannot be easily reached, but views the entire area inside the motor home.
I usually recommend placing the motion detector on a shelf in a manner that hard rocking or movement of the motor home will knock the device down causing it to notify the panel (in addition to if someone breaks into the motor home.
I usually recommend this in addition to an automotive security system. You use the wireless motion detector when you are storing the RV and reattach the power to the automotive system when you are traveling.
Specialty RV Alarms
Specialty RV alarm systems are also manufactured by companies like RV Guardian. This rather interesting system incorporates a large number of features to protect your Motor Home, Travel trailer or other RV including intrusion detection, fire, lass of power and low battery voltage. The system uses an IP connection to transmit this information to you (though the Guardian central station). You are even able to log into the system giving you control of the security system. Of course with all these features comes a much higher price tag. But this is an excellent option if you plan on storing your RV at an RV storage location.
